We try to break every result before you see it.
Most backtests look good because they are allowed to. These are the rules ours has to pass, including the limits we would rather you hear from us.
The rules
- Point-in-time data
- A strategy only sees what was known on each date. In portfolio tests, the universe is the one that existed then, not the one that survived.
- Costs on every trade
- Commission and slippage are charged per side, with a different cost by asset class.
- Walk-forward
- History is split into segments, and the result must hold on data the rule did not see.
- Deflated Sharpe
- The Sharpe ratio is discounted for the number of attempts, because trying many ideas produces lucky ones.
- Parameter sensitivity
- If a result disappears when the numbers change slightly, it was not an edge.
- Split-half stability
- The first half of the period is compared with the second, to catch a couple of lucky years.
- Pre-registered and reproducible
- Public verdicts cite the exact rule, data window, costs and an artifact ID.
What we tell you upfront
- In the public single-asset lab, index members are today's, so those verdicts carry survivorship risk. We say so on the protocol.
- Costs use today's levels, which favors strategies in decades when real commissions were much higher.
- Not every famous strategy survives these tests, and we publish the ones that fail too.
- A simulated result is not a future result.
